Accelerated Reader Shelf Dividers

Updated: Nov 30, 2022

The schools in my area use Accelerated Reader, AR for short, to evaluate students reading comprehension. At my library we recently reorganized our Beginning Reader section by AR level to help parents and kids find books in their level for school. We chose to do this because most often parents with younger children, kindergarten to 3rd grade would gravitate to that section for school reading . Changing the beginning reader section was the logical step based on the needs of our patrons.

I made shelf dividers to communicate these changes to our patrons. As you know graphic design is all about communication. The signs are simple and eye catching. The color of each sign matches the color of each level on the AR stickers and the text tells the AR level as well.. We have AR stickers on most of our books from picture books to chapter books, and even graphic novels. We would explain the sticker colors and how to know if a book was in the desired level. Before adding these signs parents often didn't notice the AR stickers on the book spines, now I rarely have to point out the stickers to them or explain which color they are looking for. I also made this Accelerated Reader info graphic for the sides of the shelf, to help clarify how the Accelerated Reader program works and what the numbers actually mean
