Woodblock Printing Process

Woodblock printing requires designs to be carved into wooden blocks to create a stamp for transferring ink to paper or silk. Images with multiple colors require individually carved blocks to build up an image in layers. You can see a little bit of the process in this photo above, of the creation of Plum Park in Kameido by Hiroshige Utagawa.
